For years there was nothing: a handful of amateur snapshots had been culled together for books like Rap Attack, Yes Yes Y'All and Steven Hager's Hip Hop. Back In The Days, Jamal Shabazz' tome, made a huge and well deserved splash, but we are talking early-mid '80s. Where were the photos of the 'old' old school? They were at Joe Conzo's house. Joe Conzo was the official snapper for the Cold Crush Brothers, and an aspiring documentary photographer, who shot a lot of hip-hop shows circa 1979-1981. Then Joe was hit hard by life, became a junkie and homeless. He cleaned up in 1990 and became an Emergency Paramedic, driving an ambulance in the very Bronx neighbourhoods that he'd spent years down and out in. He's now active in his Union, and in Narcotics Anonymous. Joe's Eye is fantastic: the drama and dynamics of early hip-hop are captures in his photographs, a small selection of which are shown below. FACT teamed up with Johan Kugelberg and Freewheelin' Media to produce a show entitled Born In The Bronx, wherein a larger selection of original photos and handmade flyers were shown. |
